Spanish Learning Tips

Here, we'd like to share with you some practical advices gathered from other successful foreign language students. Best of luck!

Speaking Spanish

  • Using Spanish courses that come with CD, I used to listen Spanish periodically. Always repeated what I heard, just like the speaker in the CD.
  • I listened (Spanish) radio every day. Said aloud what I learned. And tried to use it whenever I could. It's so simple but if you do it every day, it really helps a lot.
  • I made the opportunities to use Spanish by myself. I've been a member of "The Spanish Table" (a club to talk in Spanish). When I went there, I already had a topic to talk about and I had it well practiced in my head. I loved it when the conversation went on exactly like I've planned out before. After the conversation, I reviewed some things that I wanted to say but I couldn't.
  • I ask lots of questions and try to talk a lot in my class. Also I talk to my friends who are about as good as I am or better in Spanish. If we get stuck on something, we talk it over in English to find out how we could say it next time.
  • Even if it doesn't make much sense, I try to talk to my Spanish teacher with Spanish. Making a presentation in Spanish was a really good opportunity for me to use Spanish.
  • I used to get myself involved in a situation where I was forced to speak Spanish. This pressure to talk in Spanish seems to work fine for me.
  • Memorized daily expressions and basic grammars by saying them aloud. Also, I wrote them on paper many times. I think I memorized more than 500 sentences. I still remember them though.
  • I always repeated a sentence by changing a part of it. For example, "I like to read. You like to read. You like to write..."
  • I talk by myself in Spanish. Like describing what I see and my feelings of the moment in Spanish to have more chances to use Spanish.
  • I talk to myself about what happened during the day before going to bed. Sometimes I think about how I would respond if someone interviews me.
  • I try to talk in Spanish even if it's a little bit difficult. I take note on parts that I couldn't express myself to find out a perfect expression later.
  • I studied the proper knowledge about Spanish pronunciation. Then I listened to correct Spanish pronunciation to imitate and learn.
  • First, listen to the right pronunciation many times. Then, try to say it aloud just like what you listened. Finally, correct the wrong pronunciation. Have someone help you to do this.
  • They taught me the right pronunciation and reading aloud from the start. I read in my home all the time too
  • Reading aloud and memorization are things that you can't skip by. Don't read to memorize. Read to understand the meaning. Do this for 10-30 minutes every day.
  • What I used to study was my textbook from school. I used to read aloud the parts that I will learn day after and also read aloud what I learned in the class. I think I read the same part like 100 times.
  • In the beginning, you have to realize that you'll have accent in your Spanish and you'll have grammatical errors also. But you have to speak anyways.
  • When you reach a certain level, to improve and make your Spanish more precise, you have to find somebody with innate ability as an editor. You have to realize the person's ability and take advantage of it too.
  • As you gain experience studying and communicating with foreigners, the focus of study changes from being able to talk fast to being able to communicate yourself with appropriateness and accuracy.
