Momostenango

Humberto Akabal is one of the most celebrated Mayan writers in Guatemala who writes in both Spanish and in K'iche. He is from Momostenango y still lives there. He is also well know in other countries and his poems are translated in various European languages and in Japanese also. In one of this poems he writes: “De mis recuerdos tengo uno que me viene de muy lejos. Y es que yo creía que el canto salía de los ojos de mi madre”. In Momostenango, beautiful "ponchos" or wool jackets are made. Majority of people speak Kiché and Spanish. Although the market is held on Wednesday too, it is recommended to visit the one on Sunday. 15 minutes away from the village, you can go to Riscos de Momostenango which is geological formation of big rocks.
