Objective: Educate people about better use of natural resources, prevent forestal fires and plant more trees. We have 30000 trees growing each year and we'd like to double it to 60000 trees in 5 years.

Vision: Improve the use of natural resources.

Mission: Sustain forests and nature in the rural areas of Quetzaltenango.

Work Descriptions

1. Prevention of forestal fire: Have discussions in schools and talk to farmers about fire prevention. Give workshops for forestal fire fighters. Promote the use of other forms of fuels instead of fire woods from forest and make more fuel efficient stoves. Monitor and extinguish fire activities in forests.

2. Reforestation: Identify appropriate areas and plant trees. (Begins in May when rainy season starts.) The trees come from the greenhouse owned by the organization.

3. Training and education: Train forest rangers and educate students in elementary schools about how to make best use of forests. Make a teaching manual for elementary school teachers in order to teach about forest conservation. Teach about sustainable use of forest instead of cutting trees down to make corn field and abandoning it later. Research about the touristic use of forest such as disigning a walking path, rest area, camping area, etc.

4. Protection of animals in forest: Monitor the activities of animals sucha as "pavo de cacho" which is in danger of extinction. (Leave Xela at 4am to go watch the bird.)

5. Preparation in the greenhouse: Go collect seeds in forest. Construct more greenhouses. Maintain and equip them with more tools in the existing greenhouses. Take care of baby trees such as putting them in trays, transferring them to bigger bags as they grow, make composts and mix soils, etc
